The Kiwanis Club of Tysons is a group of young professionals dedicated to making their communities a better place with an emphasis on working with youth while having fun.
Making a Difference in our Communities
Kiwanis helps our communities in countless ways to fulfill the needs of our society. By working together, our members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. Our main focus is working with youths to maximize their potential. When you give a child the chance to learn, experience, dream, grow, succeed and thrive, great things happen.
Our Worldwide Presence – Kiwanis International
Kiwanis International was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. Now in over 80 nations and with a network of service leadership programs, there are over 600,000 people working under the Kiwanis name. Our service leadership programs span from elementary school children through college students as well as adults with disabilities.
Local Network of Like-Minded Volunteers – Capital District
Kiwanis International is divided into districts which cover a large geographical area. The Kiwanis Club of Tysons is a part of the Capital District which includes 185 Kiwanis clubs in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia. On a more local basis, our club with 11 other clubs in Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William and Arlington counties form the 2nd Division of the Capital District. All members from Division 2 frequently work together on local projects and sponsor over 50 service leadership program clubs in local elementary, middle, and high schools along with 4 clubs on college campuses.
In both 2006 and 2012, the club served as the lead club to host the Capital District Kiwanis Convention in Reston, VA. The club again served in this role in 2010 to host the combined Capital District Mid-Winter Conference and CKI District Convention in Arlington, VA.
The club has been recognized in many areas by Kiwanis with awards in service, communication and interclub relations. Many club members also serve at the district level in various leadership capacities. Two of our members have served as Governor of the Capital District. Currently, the District Trustee for National Capital Region and Division 2 Lt. Governor are members of the club along with other club members who serve as district committee chairs.
Two Decades of Helping Northern Virginia
Our club was formed in 1998 by a group of young Kiwanis members and alumni of our service leadership programs who desired a club to strongly focus on hands-on community service and provide a lower cost alternative to the traditional Kiwanis club. Since our inception, we have contributed over 20,000 hours of services to the Northern Virginia area and have fund-raised well over $25,000 for local charities.
Service Leadership Programs (SLPs) are an important part of our club’s service portfolio. In 2002, our club took over the sponsorship of the Key Clubs at Lake Braddock Secondary School and West Springfield High School. Our club sponsored its first college based SLP by rechartering the CKI Club at George Mason University in 2006.
In 2009, our club took over the sponsorship of the Key Clubs at Herndon High School. In 2010, our club chartered the Key Club of Chantilly High School as well as our first K-Kids club at Pinecrest School. In 2011, we chartered the Key Club of Freedom High School and 2012, we chartered the Key Club of George C. Marshall High School.
Key Clubs at George Mason High School, James Madison High School, and Freedom High School were added in 2013 and 2014.
Today, the Kiwanis Club of Tysons is the proud sponsor of 11 SLP clubs.
